On 1 July 2026 the UK Global Talent visa gained a dedicated Design Industry endorsement route. For the first time, product, graphic, industrial and brand designers have a framework built for their profession, rather than one they have to squeeze into. If you are a designer with an international track record, or a studio thinking about who you can bring into the UK, this is a development worth understanding properly.
Here is what actually changed, who qualifies, and how the new route fits next to the digital technology pathway that Orabo already helps people navigate.
What changed on 1 July
The March 2026 Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 1691) added a Design Industry endorsement pathway to Appendix Global Talent. It took effect on 1 July 2026. This is not a new visa. It is a new endorsement route inside the existing Global Talent visa, which is one of the most flexible work routes the UK offers: no job offer, no employer sponsorship, and no minimum salary threshold. Successful applicants can work as employees, freelancers or company directors within their field, bring dependants, and build towards settlement.
Until now, designers had to apply through the broader Arts and Culture category via Arts Council England, or through Tech Nation if their work was digital. Neither was a natural home for applied, commercial or product-focused design careers. The new route gives design its own criteria and its own assessing body.
Which fields the Design route actually covers
This is where applicants need to be careful, because not every design discipline is assessed by the DBA. Some fields sit with a different endorsing body, and applying to the wrong one wastes time and money.
The Design Industry route is aimed at applied and commercial design: graphic design, product design, industrial design, brand design, service design and similar disciplines. But several adjacent fields are explicitly routed elsewhere:

The UX and UI point is the one most people get wrong. If your practice is primarily user experience or user interface design for digital products, your natural home is still the Tech Nation digital technology route, not the new Design route. Getting this right before you apply is one of the highest-value decisions in the whole process.
Talent versus Promise
As with every Global Talent pathway, the Design route is assessed under two levels. Exceptional Talent is for established leaders with a substantial, recognised track record. Exceptional Promise is for earlier-career applicants who can show clear leadership potential and a developing track record. The level you are endorsed under affects your settlement timeline: Exceptional Talent applicants can usually apply for settlement after three years, while Exceptional Promise applicants typically need five.
The Design route also places unusual weight on the CV. The published guidance is explicit that the CV must show a substantial professional track record, with specific dates for every engagement, and must link to a website showing past, current and future work. A screenshot or a bare LinkedIn link is not accepted as the CV itself. For a route that is otherwise flexible, this is a demanding evidential bar, and it is where many applications will be decided.

The Design pathway is a meaningful widening of one of the UK's best routes for independent, internationally recognised talent. It closes a real gap for commercial and product designers who never fit neatly into the arts categories.
